At The Dunham School, we are dedicated to equipping students with the tools, discernment, and Christian values they need to navigate an ever-changing world, including how we approach the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in our classrooms. Our goal is not simply to teach students how to use AI, but to help them develop the wisdom to know when and why to use it. To that end, we have adopted an AI Position Statement that provides a thoughtful, faith-centered framework for using AI responsibly, ethically, and purposefully in teaching and learning.

Our approach to AI is neither fearful avoidance nor unchecked enthusiasm. We anticipate that our AI framework will continue to evolve, but the principles behind it will not. AI can individualize deepen inquiry and extend what students and teachers can accomplish, but it remains a tool. The qualities we seek to cultivate in every Dunham graduate—wisdom, integrity, compassion, faith, and the ability to think critically—cannot be outsourced to technology.

AI Tiered-Use Policy

Dunham's AI Position Statement is paired with a tiered-use policy that provides a practical framework for students and teachers structured around around three levels of AI use. These guidelines help students in grades 3-12 learn how to use AI thoughtfully, fostering their ability to think critically, act ethically, and honor God in all they do. Teachers specify acceptable levels of AI use for assignments, and discussions about AI’s role and impact are integrated into our curriculum.

LEVEL 1: AI Free
  • Work must be completed without any AI assistance.
  • Students must rely entirely on their own knowledge, understanding, and skill.
  • Any AI use is a violation of student academic integrity.
LEVEL 2: AI Enhanced
  • AI assists the student in their understanding of a topic or idea through AI-generated content.
  • AI may be used to enhance the student’s knowledge, efficiency, and creativity.
  • The student is responsible for evaluating the validity, accuracy, and bias of any AI generated content used in the assignment.
  • All AI use should be cited.
LEVEL 3: AI Empowered
  • AI is used as a tool to make previously impossible or very difficult tasks possible for students.
  • Students use AI to enhance their own critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving.
  • The student is responsible for evaluating the validity, accuracy, and bias of any AI-generated content used in the assignment.
  • Detailed disclosure of all AI empowered content is submitted with the final product.

 
Artificial Intelligence should support the growth and development of our students but never replace the human thinking, learning, and character formation thAT education requires. Technology will change. Our mission will not.
