Village Schools International Tanzania, Africa http://www.villageschools.org/ Contact: jacquelyn.westerman@dunhamschool.org
The mission of Village Schools International is to start schools in villages where few children have the opportunity to attend school beyond the 7th grade. In the past, Dunham has supported Village Schools through book donations through our Library, and alumna Magan Zimmerman Cavalier ’04 served as a teacher with Village Schools two years ago.
Current Focus Dunham’s current focus in this outreach effort is to help VS develop their science curriculum. How? • Ideas for demonstrations and experiments using materials readily available in Tanzania (To see science curriculum that has already been developed at http://vsiscience.wetpaint.com/ ) • Small group of Dunham faculty and students will visit Tanzania in June to demonstrate lessons to teachers and students & build relationships for future partnership opportunities
What Can You Do? • Pray for Village Schools and our efforts to partner with them • Donate science books and used laptop computers to be sent to Tanzania for student use. (Contact jacquelyn.westerman@dunhamschool.org or kay.broussard@dunhamschool.org if you have items to donate) • Donate funds to help support VSI’s ministry. Their financial needs include: providing scholarships for girls to attend schools, building schools, providing water for their schools, teaching materials and support for missionary teachers. Donations can be made through Dunham and are tax-deductible. • Students who work on this project may earn Community Service hours toward graduation requirements. Students can also provide a service (i.e. babysitting, tutoring, yardwork, etc) in exchange for a donation to the project. Contact jacquelyn.westerman@dunhamschool.org for details.
