College Counseling FAQs

FAQs for the College Admissions Process

The college admissions process can be an exciting but sometimes overwhelming process.  Many times, just knowing what questions to ask can make all the difference. Here are a few of the more frequently asked questions to help  get you started.

The College Search Process

When should I start thinking about the college admissions process?
It’s never too early to start thinking about college. The college admissions process is a four year journey that begins in the freshman year and ends when you graduate. In making their decisions, colleges will review your entire high school transcript. So, it’s important that you begin to build a strong transcript in the ninth grade.

With over 2,400 four-year accredited colleges and universities across the country, where do you even begin to look for the “right” match?
First of all, it’s important to understand there is not just one “perfect” school. There are hundreds of schools that offer programs and services to match your needs and interests. So, don’t rule out a school just because you have never heard of it. In today’s technological society, the web can be a great place to start. If there is a particular school you are researching, simply visit their web site. If you don’t have a particular school in mind, there are a number of web sites that will help you identify schools based on your interests. Try visiting petersons.com, collegeboard.com and mycollegeguide.org to get started. In addition to the web, there are a number of reference books and guides that provide useful information identifying potential schools. Check with your library or counselor to see what is available. Finally, talk to older siblings or friends who have already been through the process. They can be a valuable resource based on their experience and help steer you in the right direction.

Is it helpful to visit colleges?
Always! Anytime you can visit a college campus is beneficial. Even if you just happen to be driving by while on vacation, stop. No view book, web site or video, can take the place of stepping foot on campus and seeing it for yourself. If possible, visit the admissions office and take a tour. If not, simply walk around and see how the campus “feels.” You would be surprised how that “feel” can influence your decision.
