Mission & Accreditation

Our Mission

The Dunham School seeks to provide students with the opportunity for college preparatory education set in a framework of Christian instruction and example. To this end, the school offers boys and girls rigorous academic instruction: challenging athletic and recreational activities, and creative expression in the fine arts. Each of these opportunities is ultimately grounded in a desire to educate the heart.

By education of the heart, we mean addressing spiritual issues from a Christian perspective and allowing our students the opportunity to begin to understand themselves and the world around them from a Christian worldview. Some of this education of the heart will be formal (chapel, Bible classes and studies, counseling), while the rest will happen as the faculty and the students interact in the normal flow of school activity. This, then, is a truly holistic view of education—a desire to educate the whole child: academically, physically in the creative realm, socially, and spiritually. The key to what we are doing is the faculty, who serve as role models in each of these areas as men and women mature in their professional growth and Christian faith.

Central to our vision of a rigorous college preparatory education is our strong commitment to the character development of our students. As a school, it is our mission to educate your children. As a Christian school, it is our mission to educate your children within a framework of godly instruction and example.

Our History

In 1979, five Baton Rouge families joined together in prayer, committed to forming a college preparatory school grounded in Christian faith and principles. As these individuals began the complex task of integrating faith and learning, they established three pillars of purpose—academics, arts, and athletics—all resting upon a foundational faith in Jesus Christ. Their dreams formed the vision behind The Dunham School’s mission to educate minds and hearts for Christ.

Today, as we reflect on how far we have come from the small school that first opened in 1981 at The Chapel on the Campus, we are reminded that God’s vision has always been bigger than our dreams.  Thanks to the efforts of our administration, board, faculty and staff; the stewardship of our generous donors; and the steadfast prayers of many, The Dunham School has become the leading Christian college preparatory school in Baton Rouge, serving approximately 730 students in PreK3 through 12th grade.

The Honor Code

"I want to be a person who seeks God first, above pursuit of my personal gain or pleasure. I ask God to change my heart to be more like Jesus so I may live more fully for His honor and glory. Today, with God’s help, I commit to being honest, respectful of others and their property, cooperative with all school authorities and active in service to others. On my word of honor, I will strive to be an exemplary citizen of The Dunham School."

The Honor Code is the basis for all conduct policies and a primary building block of our school community. We believe that each student should have a strong sense of personal honor and integrity and that these character qualities will be vital assets throughout life.
